Primordial Daydream

A new short composition I wrote today. I experimented with recording an African mbira mixed with samples. I also recorded myself playing some primal effects on a flute.

Description: "Your mind suddenly takes you back to your most primal state. You are running through a jungle, lead only by instincts, being chased by an unknown danger. Everything feels familiar -- as if it were some distant memory. Just as you feel the jaws of death around your neck, you wake up."

I don't know why I had a description for such a short piece, but it was what I was kind of thinking as I wrote it. Enjoy!

Hard Wire

Here is a new demo I put together with commercial music in mind. I wanted to do something new with this, so I featured my PVC instrument (something I haven't put into any of my compositions yet). The song starts out with a single PVC pitch and I layered in a few effects. I hope to involve my unique instrument in many more projects to come. I hope you like it!

Oh, and I guess I accidentally disabled comments -- fixed now. So, you know, comment if you feel like it.

Tracks and Fields

So I found this great website called Tracks and Fields. This is how it works: Ad Agencies, Film Producers, and Game Producers of the sort can send them request for music they need. This website will post these requests and composers turn in submissions based on the needs of the client. The client then gets to pick from those submission and the composer chosen gets PAID. Pretty cool idea if you ask me. Although, I believe any artist should get paid for their work. Not only are we working hard to create something like this, but we are producing something nobody else can create. So, when a company says,"create something for me and I will tell you if I will buy it," that puts us in a bad spot.

Anyways, despite my general conflict with this, I will try it out a few times. Some day I will get my feet on the ground and will not need it anymore. If anything, it's a cool way to give myself composition assignments when I have some free time.

FMOD: Creating Adaptive Audio for Games

For those of you into game audio, I am finding FMOD to be a very powerful program for making your game music/sound effects creatively adaptive and interactive.

I have always wondered how game composers made their music so well integrated into the thier games without having any computer programing skills. Sure, the programmers do a lot of audio programming, but there are just somethings only an audio dude can do. As awesome and important programmers are (my brother is one in fact), I never felt completely comfortable giving them 50% control of my music.

The FMOD Designer software was the answer for me -- why? Because it is designed for audio geeks that couldn't code their way out of an 8bit sack! All that seemingly impossible, high-level stuff I can now do, such as:

1.) Create music that changes seamlessly depending on the state of the game (exmaple: you are fighting a bad guy, then 10 more bad guys show up so you want the music to get more intense)

2.) Variation and/or randomizxation of music/sound to create a unique audio experience every time the player turns on the game.

3.) Create real-time atmospheric audio events via randomization effects.

4.) Incorporate real-time audio effects (example: reverb for when the player goes into a cave. The music and sound with have an "echo" effect to it until the player is out of the cave)

5.) Save on system resources using banks, randomization of your sound files (so you don't have to make a bunch of different sound files, FMOD does it for you), and real-time effects.

I am still trying to wrap my head around this program, but it is actually pretty easy to use. I hope to create some adaptive music demos soon. I also plan using it in a few upcoming game projects I have in the near future. If you are into game audio, here is a great YouTube tut to get you started (aside from just reading the documentation of course):

Job Posting: Composer for Hire

Time for a rant. If you are a composer, or a Freelancer of any kind, you may know a thing or two about what I am going through. So here is a recap of the past few months: I have (with the help of my brilliant wife) have started a freelance music composition business, built (with the help of my brilliant brother) a website I am proud of, estabished my fees, established my services, opened a bank account for the business, purchased enough professional music gear for the studio, launched a social marketing campaign, started this blog, started networking with game devs and other audio professionals, and created a long list of demos to demonstrate my abilities to potential clients.

I am proud of what I have accomplished; however, all that is just the first level. I have now arrived at level 2-1...get some work! I have experience writing music for games and promo videos for businesses, but I am looking for some consistent projects. I am VERY lucky to have a full time job teaching music. That way, I don't have to rely on writing music to eat. I can just be fully creative without the pressure of basic survival at hand,

However, getting work is a very tough thing -- especially when I live away from the main hubs of my industry (L.A., San Fransico, Seatle, Austin, New York). I do my best with trying to connect with others and giving myself some online visibility. My plan is to continue with that, but also go to some conferences in my field and meet some people face to face. I also plan to seek out clients locally and build a reputation with my community. There are plenty of businesses and production companies that need music and sound for advertising.

As far as game music, I have completed a demo reel aimed towards a specific local developing company. I plan to send it out this week and hopefully get in co tact with them shorly. In th coming months, I plan to create an amazing demo reel and send it off to at least a hundred game developers -- just go all out!

So, I have been working hard and I have a lot of hard work ahead of me. This new level will be toug, but I know if I am persistent and patient I will land some gigs and I might even land a huge one. If not, I will keep movivng forward because: the princess is always in the next castle.

One Fine Day

A new demonstration of my abilities. This is a genre I have not explored a whole lot as a composer -- ambient music. I guess the drummer in me has fought writing relaxing, slow, meditative music; although, I have always loved listening to that kind of stuff. Let me know what you think on my Facebook page.

As I get more involved with the community of my craft I plan to aim my blog posts towards others like me (music and game geeks of the sort). I will still post updates and music, but I also plan to "talk shop" and share what I learn on this adventure. On that note, I've joined a great community called G.A.N.G. No, I did not join a gang -- it is the Game Audio Network Guild. If you are insterested in game audio of any kind it is a great way to learn and network with other professionals.

Also, check out my brother's website: Jelly Kacobs. It has nothing to do with what I was just talking about; nonetheless, it is hilarious.

Hurry! Find the Thing!

Folks, today I have TWO short compositions for you today (double the trouble). The first is called "Find the Thing". I wanted to compose some music aimed towards children. It would work well in a kid's video game or film.

The second is called "Chasing Time". I wanted to give a panic feeling of time running out. Also (warning: geek-talk ahead), I did some experimenting with hybrid orchestration of real sampled instruments and synthesizers. It was hard to get the two worlds to gel without a good reverb to glue it all together, but I think it turned out fine. Hope you enjoy them:

The Adventurer

Here is a new demo I just finished. It portrays the excitment of being on some wicked adventure. Who knows what epic situations this untold and unspecific hero might and/or might not run into. Adventure HOORA!

On a more intellegent note, I composed and developed a melodic/rhythmic theme first estabilished by the horns. If I were to use this in a game/film, you might hear that theme when I wanted you to think of this adventurer. Here it is:

If you noticed, it kind of fades out in the middle of something. I plan on building a good amount of demo music to send off to clients soon. The fade-out allows me to: 1.)compose a larger variety of demo music without having to compose an entire song. 2.)protects my work because nobody will want to steal a song that stops in the middle...right? THanks for listening!

Website Launch!

My professional website is now officially launched:

www.patjacobsmusic.com

A big thanks to Kelly Jacobs for building the website for us. He did an awesome job with making it look classy and hip. If anyone out there is needing a cool website, he is the guy to call. Srsly.

Starting Lineup

New music I wrote for the Springfield Cardinals starting lineup. They will play this music as they announce the players. I was asked to write a hyped up "rock opera" style. I hope it is rawk-tastic enough.

UPDATE: Here is a low-quality recording of the music used in the game with the announcer. I have to say, it lines up pretty well!

Canned Trailer

I felt like making a movie/game trailer demo. It is almost a parody of your typical over-dramatic and over-done trailer music. Enjoy!

Motivational

Back to making some music!

In the next few months, I will be working on developing a long list of demos that demonstrate my abilities as a composer. I plan to create demos in a variaty of styles and genre to meet the needs of any client.

Although emotional and motivational music is not particularly my cup of tea, there is a demand for it at times. Here is a demo demonstrating that style. Most of this was made using my EastWest samples and Cubase 5.5.

Motivational by patjacobsmusic

By the way, I will be launching a website very soon (forged by my brother, Master Kelroy). There, I will have all my demos for fans and potential clients to hear. Stay tuned!

A Little Help from My Friends

I am in need of some assistance! I am getting a bunch of opportunities to play my PVC instrument. The problem is, it is hard to transport because of it's size and weight (it will not fit in my Jetta). At this point, my dad has been helping me move this thing for me, but I cannot ask him to do this every time I have a gig (even though he probably would cause he is awesome like that).

I need anybody willing to be "on call" to help me transport it with one of the following: a truck, a big van, a trailer of some kind. I would obviously let you know well in advance. Your reward? Gas money, a free performance, my gratitude, and a song request of your choice!

It would be even more awesome if I can borrow some kind of small trailer to attach to the back of my wife's Tracker. That way I could just lug it around myself. Anyways, I will be VERY thankful if anyone can help me out. Let me know on here or my facebook page.

Artsfest Victory

Thanks to all that assisted and attended! My visability continues to climb which is great for my ambitions (although, I definetly do not have a strong personal need for attention so I am finding that part a bit weird). I think I turned some heads and am getting all kinds of new gigs and opportunities. I also raised some money to put into my music studio. Life is good!

Time to step away from the pipes for a while and write some music. Lots to be posted soon!

The Place to Be

Hey Ma, I's gonna be on da TV!

So one of our local news stations, KY3, saw the YouTube video of me playing my PVC instrument. They got a hold of me and they want me to perform live on their morning show at 6:45, May 2nd! I am very nervious, but VERY excited. I started this PVC playing: 1.) Because it sounded awesome and fun 2.) To gain some visability to jump start my business as a media composer. Well, I have realized that I am definetly getting visability (and having lots of fun of course!). Thanks to family, friends, and friendly strangers for spreading the word about me. Let's see where it goes from here, ay?

UPDATE: Due to recent worldly events of a well-known terorist leader being slain, my performance has been moved to May 3rd, Tuesday, at the same time. In fact they taped me today, so it was a little less stressful than playing live!

PVC Preview

This is a sneak peek into my upcoming performance at Springfield Artsfest, May 8th 2011. Here I am playing an original composition/improvisation, followed by a little Mario 1-1, and finishing with Devil Went Down to Georgia. Hope you enjoy it!

I have quite a few songs lined up for Artsfest, but if you have any requests that you think would sound good on these pipes please let me know on here! Otherwise, see you at Artsfest!

Koh the Face Stealer

Here is another short one. In this, I used a unique Ozarkian instrument known as the Mouth Bow. Typically, you play it's one string with your mouth (like a jew's harp) and a guitar pick. I broke the rules and wanted to hear what it would sound like if I played it with a violin bow -- I got some freaky results!

Koh the Face Stealer by patjacobsmusic

A prize goes to who can guess where the name came from. Oh, and don't google it...I will know if you did...

It is complete!

Well, after many many hours of hard work, I have finally brain-birthed this crazy idea into reality. Behold! My new PVC Instrument...thing. Yeah, I still haven't named it yet, but I welcome any suggestions. I had many requests from people to hear what it sounds like, so I posted a video of me playing all the notes from the bottom up:

Yes, there are still a few things to do: pretty it up, fine-tune some of the notes, make a cart (yeah, puting wheels on it wasn't going to work), and make some paddles to hit the pipes with. Overall, I am very excited and ready to start playing it!

***UPDATE***

I will be doing my first performance on this thing on May 8th at Artsfest in Springfield. Time still yet to be determined.

Quantum Leap

I have had my eye on the great things EastWest has been doing, and I finally saved up and got a whole collection of their finest sample libraries. The quality of these sounds are blowing my mind and it's very easy to use. My new collections are:

EWQL Symphonic Orchestra -- Strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Big win.

EWQL Symphonic Choirs -- An assortment of human voice choirs with a word builder (I can get them to say whatever I please, which will conjure up many hilarious ideas)

EWQL Pianos -- High quality piano samples.

EWQL Stormdrum 2 Pro -- Amazing percussion library (huge boomage)

EWQL Gypsy -- An assortment of gypsy-style musical instruments.

EWQL Ministry of Rock -- Guitars, basses and drums.

EWQL RA -- A bunch of rare world instruments.

These libraries will definitely be taking my music to the next level (level 2-1 to be precise). Since I am on spring break, I will be spending probably too much time playing around with them. Expect some new demos this week!

Problema risolto

Might as well start putting some music on here, ay? This is a short demo I made a couple months back. I wrote this in one afternoon after solving an uninteresting and insignificant dilemma I was having that day. I don't remember what that dilemma was, but the song tells us that I vanquished it. Win!

Problema risolto by patjacobsmusic

Note: the title is Italian for "Problem Solved". This is dedicated to my friend Craig who taught me how to speak Italian correctly.

Project Code Name: "Coughing Walrus"

This has been a little project I've been working on the past couple months. It is a 25-note musical instrument made entirely of PVC pipe (and a slab-o-particle board). Above is the progress I've been making with it and the bottom picture is where it's at now. I've gone through Phases (that's what I call them to make it feel more important) of development.

Phase I: Make the board with holes in it.
Phase II: Put some legs on that board.
Phase III: Cut, tune, place, and glue all 25 different notes.
Phase IV: Suspend the pipes to the board and then take a nap.
Phase V: Put wheels on the whole thing.
Phase VI: ???
Phase VII: Play it!

I am in the end of Phase III now with only 5 more notes to go! When I am finished you'll see a lot of me playing it in the Springfield, MO area.

More updates to come!

The Start of Something Big

Welcome to my new blog! This is just the start of me finally putting myself out into the world as a music composer and performer. I live and breathe music, and composing has always run through my veins (at a tempo of 75 bpm).

I hope to make a serious career out of making music for games, businesses, movies, performing groups, and other media. This is the year I walk through that door -- and I plan on kicking that door down and screaming my mightiest of mighty war cries (I have still yet to figure out my war cry). I know full well I will run into many obstacles, things will not go my way, or the princess will be in another castle. I must persevere and know this: the princess is probably in the next castle... or, the one after that...

I plan on posting music, updates on projects, composition/performance gigs, or just ramble on about crap that is on my mind. As a fresh freelance composer, I ask for your support and welcome you to check out my blog weekly.

Publicity projects in the works: the Pat Jacobs Music website, Facebook page, YouTube channel, registering Pat Jacobs Music as a business (like, a real business!). Tell your frends! More to come!
